But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33
Over the centuries scientists, astrologers & physicists have made many wonderful discoveries relating to space, time, gravity and a whole host of other interesting things. Their discoveries showed or proved that the earth & universe are governed by certain laws or principles, such as thermodynamics, gravity, motion and relativity. Their discoveries at the time were so groundbreaking that it changed the way we viewed earth, space, planets & in time changed the way we go about life. Although their discoveries were major at the time there was actually nothing new about them other than we had discovered something that God had put in place at the beginning of time. Scientists proved these laws exist and that they work.
The fact that we have proven that certain laws exist & work within our universe should then make it pretty simple for us as Christians to believe God when speaks about the law of seedtime & harvest. God didn’t say to Adam in the beginning watch out for the law of gravity, He said everything produces according to its kind and gave him an instruction to be fruitful and multiply. He gives them the law of seedtime & harvest and said that based on this law they must be fruitful & multiply. In Genesis 8 after the flood, God reminds Noah again of the law of seedtime & harvest and establishes it as the law by which all creation will live. God gave us the principle by which we are blessed and by which we will increase in every area in our lives.
We know that the law of seedtime & harvest is true and that it works but that is not always a guarantee that it will work or that people will apply it. When it comes to sowing & money we have to do it with the right motive. For every truth about God the enemy brings a parallel lie. God says be fruitful & multiply, the Devil says store up for yourself, God says sow, the Devil says hold on. When Jesus spoke in Matthew 6 He was prioritising our motives. Very often as Christians we can chase the blessing and gather things when God says, be a blessing and I will give you those things. Jesus said we can’t serve Him and money because some time or other we will love the one and hate the other. God wants to have things but not at the expense of our relationship with Him. Often times we base our sowing or giving on our situation, but God says don’t worry just sow; I will look after you because I look after everything I create.
There are 3 levels on which every Christian should be living when it comes to sowing. First we honour God with our tithe, which is the first 10% of our gross income every month (Malachi 3:8-10). Secondly we sow an offering above and beyond our tithe as a gift to God (remember the tithe is already His) and to allow God to bring continuous increase into our life (1 Corinthians 16:2). Thirdly we sow from the first portion of our increase, meaning that whenever we are gifted with something for which we had to do no work (a gift, inheritance, financial blessing) we offer a tithe of that back to God in appreciation to Him for bringing these unexpected blessings upon our life.
The amazing thing about seedtime & harvest is that once you set this principle in motion it becomes a never ending source of blessing & favour in your life, because you can never outgive God. He promises in His word that whatever we sow, He’ll multiply back to us more than we had sown in the first place. When we put our trust in God and obey Him, He will add things to our life which we don’t have to toil for or chase after.
Honour the lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. Proverbs 3:9-10
